Puy de Dome volcano

The "puy de Dome" is the star volcano of all volcanoes!

Share

Rising to a height of 1,465 meters, it offers a magnificent panoramic vista. The panoramic view from the summit looking out over the  almost 80 volcanoes is outstanding.

It is the celebrity of so many postcards that have made a thousand tours around the world; the obstacle that cyclists dread during the Tour de France and the emblem of a whole Department of the same name.

A circular tour of several orientation tables at the summit, the visitor will discover some exceptional panoramic views.

The temple of Mercury

If you want to go back to the Gallo-Roman times and discover the remains of one of the biggest temples of the Western Roman Empire, then we recommend the "free roam" visit using the youngsters "I discover... the temple of Mercure" brochure (translated, free of charge, available at the reception and information centre at Col de Ceyssat).

The puy de Dôme is a fragile natural landmark that welcomes more and more visitors each year. The Conseil Général (local authority) has applied a policy of conservation and enhancement since 1999.

Picnic room

Self-service room seating 30 inside and 50 outside. It houses a gravimetric measuring slab which assesses every year the changes in the thickness of the earth's crust. A fun and interactive scenography has been set up on the site with school children in mind along 3 themes: vulcanology, geology and seismology.

Theme paths:

Unguided visits packed with legends and anecdotes.

The chemin des pèlerins path will help you discover the context of the temple, how it is organised, the diggings and highlights of the remains.

Chemin des conquérants is where you can experience the sporting exploits, the adventure of Eugène Renaux, the Blaise Pascal experience and the story of the meteorological observatory.

Chemin des curieux, is the path for discovering the fl ora, typical of subalpine zones along with the fauna that lives at the top.

The panoramique des Dômes rack railway project

As from 2010, locals and tourists will get to the top of the Puy de Dôme by rack railway. This scenic train will take people to the summit all year round, quite safely, whatever the weather. This train will enhance the attractiveness of the site by giving passengers outstanding panoramic views of the Puy Chain and the whole département.

This will be the fi rst rack railway to be built in France on a mountain side for a century and in doing so, the fi rst total substitution of a road access. SNC-Lavalin has been entrusted with this project.

The business related to Puy de Dôme has signifi cant economic impacts on the whole area.

Caution! Until 2012...

An ambitious programme of works is in progress to counter the erosion of the summit of the Puy de Dôme by protecting the areas most frequented by walkers and paragliders. The program also includes archaeological exploration around the Temple de Mercure (Gallo-roman temple) and the renovation of Physique du Globe observation centre.

As part of the "Grand Site National" project, current works on the footpaths and reception
facilities at the summit mean that normal visiting conditions might be disrupted.

For 2 years, access will only be possible by foot along the 'Chemin des Muletiers' (see below).

Only access for visitors:

By foot along the "Chemin des Muletiers" (mule track), starting at the Col de Ceyssat (at the foot of the site, follow the RD 68 for 3 kilometres towards Ceyssat). The climb takes 45 minutes, and the height difference is 350 metres.

Please note: As the climb involves a certain height gain, those suffering from heart and breathing problems are not advised to do this. Provide for suitable footwear and clothes for the rain.
